Ukulele Comparison: KoAlana Ukuleles
Просмотров 120Месяц назад
I took a moment to compare the various KoAlana Ukuleles that I own; I am missing a model that became the KoAloha Opio. The new version needs some work on its neck design; I don’t mind the laminate body but the ergonomics should be same on all KoAloha products. I’m also finding that the Trembisi model was better than I originally gave it credit for; though it was overpriced for the general market.

There was some discussion on the Ukulele Underground Forum (web) about Der Jung tuners direct from AliExpress. Currently, I do not know a way to order Der Jung direct in the US (I have contacted their distributor in the US but did not get a reply). Thanks so much for this video. Pepe Romero advises in his own video that these Baby Baritone strings can be used on a concert. See link. ruclips.net/video/yQnMQJCkY3I/видео.html. I'm in Australia and Pepe Romera Strings are around $35aud. Like you I just want to run with one set of chord shapes and I prefer the deeper tone of DGBE. Another alternative I have found is to use on my Tenors is MARTIN M160 BALL END CLASSICAL GUITAR STRINGS - HIGH TENSION - Use string 1 as the E (can also use string 2 but if prefer string 1), 3rd string as the B, 4 string as the G and 5th string as the D. They are very similar in tension and string size to the Pepe Romero's but cost only $12aud so an even cheaper way to give this tuning a try. Take a little longer to settle in but otherwise feel the same to me. I am wanting to try DGBE on a Banjolele (looking at purchasing one) but wondering how these would sound and seeing it is harder to get a Tenor Banjolele I would be looking at putting them on a Concert Banjolele. Your thoughts? Cheers

    • @UkeStuff
      @UkeStuff 19 часов назад

      Hello! I saw that clip. I’m can’t see any reason why you couldn’t put them on a Banjolele. I use to think (many years ago) that you should only use Nylgut strings…but you could put on whatever you wanted. I just don’t see many wound strings on Banjoleles.

  • @yricyric
    @yricyric 9 дней назад

    You could possibly tune it to an open cord and then simply barre across the frets. Of course, you still couldn't play complex chords without adding more fingers. But it could be a somewhat workable alternative.

    • @UkeStuff
      @UkeStuff 4 дня назад

      It’s still just wasted money. It’s better to buy a different instrument, unless you are looking specifically for a souvenir to hang on the wall. However, I know (from experience) that there are parents who buy these for their children as “real” insruments…which they are not.

    should I buy a Makala MK-T or should I go for Kala KA-15c? Please suggest

    • @UkeStuff
      @UkeStuff 18 дней назад

      Well, one is a tenor, the other a concert. That is the main consideration. I don't think the quality of the MK-T and the KA-15c are that different; the Makala will look more vintage, the KA-15c will look a little more modern and have the etched sound hole.

    • @UkeStuff
      @UkeStuff 4 дня назад

      Sorry…replies to replies get lost in RUclips and you have to open RUclips a very specific way to see them. I don’t know the Valut brand. Your overall experience is going to be very similar with the Kala models (it’s the Makala MK-C, and Kala KA 15-C). If it’s a pure “starter” I would go with the Makala, particularly if cost were an issue. If it is just looking for a starter, I’m recently convinced that the Flight UTS ukuleles are the way to go on a budget. And these are just for instruments that are sold in stores, there are a number of what I consider to be decent ukuleles on places like Amazon that are not sold in stores. The sound quality will be similar with with both Kala models…clearly laminate, and they will be helped with other strings (I suggest trying clear fluorocarbon). Durability will be the same…they will take some abuse, but are not meant to be subjected to extreme weather conditions. Aesthetics…the KA15C is going to look at little more “special” with its soundhole…otherwise the finish (and I even think color of the finish) will be similar, though the KA 15-C might come with a slightly lighter color than the antique finish look of the MK-C. My first “real” ukulele was the MK-C. It needed to be set-up, and to have different strings before I thought it worked for me, and my guess is that you will have the same experience with most ukuleles at this price range. And again, I have no feedback for Vault…they are not available here in the US to my knowledge, though I have not looked for them.

      Any ukulele purchased from a good vendor will include or offer shipping. It all depends on your price range. I'd look at the Enya X1 Tenor as a great "middle" point between the Outdoor Ukulele (impervious to weather) and wood. It's HPL, which is offered by only two companies: Martin and Enya. The Martin OXK doesn't come in a tenor. Here's a link to the product from Amazon (and it is a referral link): amzn.to/4fbZx8H I am working on a review of the Concert version of this; and have reviewed several of Enya's HPL models in the past.

      It would depend on the pickup; I have had some passive pickups that work with an amplifier (no battery) and others that have not. You might have to try it to find out; at worst you would need to buy a small in line preamplifier.

    Not an advert in my home market, and US adverts are VERY different to UK.. but all that said - just found it mildly amusing if a very lazy stereotype to punch.. but... didn't take it that seriously - just an ad. Ultimately as much as I champion the ukulele I also recognise that it doesn't suit everyone myself and to some it appears a bit silly That's their take. Think it's more in line with the uke world to be prepared to roll with those punches and be prepared to laugh at ourselves. Fundamentalism in music isn't something I'm a fan of. There are PLENTY of jokes and memes out there about bass players, lead singers, drummers, you name it.. All fair game!

    • @UkeStuff
      @UkeStuff 4 дня назад

      I think I was thinking that you meant the OXK soprano. The S0 (or is it SO) preceded the S1 models, and were not well received by Martin aficionados. I remember watching RUclips videos about them. I don’t even know if they were Mexican models or from another source. I do know that Martin’s Mexican factory makes excellent instruments these days, and you’re getting all of the Martin experience for a fraction of the price. It does seem that lower grade wood…not in terms of quality, but in terms of grain…is used for a lot of the current C1K and T1K models (the S1 is made of mahogany and stained dark, so grain is seldom an issue), but the instruments themselves are wonderful. I am always keeping my eye open for a used C1K to add to the collection…even though I have been lucky enough to find a Model 2 concert (the more recent release) and OXK concerts for bargain prices…I am a shopper of mainly used instruments-the best value for the money.

    Very instructive. Your characterization of the sound really does not agree with your microphone in my opinion. The Martin sounds fuller and richer to me while the KLOS sounds harsh and metallic. A photographer's choice of carbon fiber for a tripod over an aluminum one is because the CF one absorbs vibrations and does not ring which makes it an odd choice for an instrument.

    • @UkeStuff

      The joy of adding audio is that you get to decide with your own ears, from the same set-up, of what you hear. The Martin is excellent-particularly with the different tuners I have now installed, but I do like the Klös as well. Is the Klös 3 to 4 times better than the Martin? Probably not, but it does stand a good chance of surviving harsh conditions in a more payable state than the Martin.

      Sorry! RUclips makes it difficult to see and respond to nested comments. I think I made a video recently of this...I went with the cheap AliExpress Der Jung UPT tuners. About $40. I think it was worth it...but I don't think I would do the Gotoh which cost $80 or more.

    Does it have rounded or beveled edges? I love that feature in the K'alohas, because it makes them so comfortable to hold.

    I am thinking of changing the strings on mine which I have had for 3 years. Is like for like replacement best or are there any strings that work better on this uke?

    • @UkeStuff
      @UkeStuff 2 месяца назад

      I like clear fluorocarbons on these (much as the Martin M600) but strings are a subjective matter.

    The Moon uke is beautiful, and I may get one someday, but for now, the Nova U Pro is a huge value for the money, and you can take it anywhere. I wish Enya would make an edition of the concert Nova with the regular frets-I would be all over that.

      I have shared that feedback with Enya directly.

    I too hate friction tuners: Martin and Flea/Fluke, please oh please put geared tuners on your ukes. We are paying enough for them that you could do that.

    • @UkeStuff
      @UkeStuff 18 дней назад

      Flea doesn't have much room on the headstock for other tuners. I put the much-questioned Graphtech Plastic Tune-a-lele tuners on mine, and they are working, but they extend a couple of millimeters over each side of the headstock...and that's about as small of a tuner as you can buy, other than using Pegheads...which are great, but definitely more difficult to install (I have them on only one ukulele in my collection).

    I have this uke, and it’s wonderful. It’s not koa of course, but it’s durable. It really pops with some Aquila Reds on it. If you’re eyeing it and on the fence, get it!

    IMO they both sounds great. I have the Martin, and it’s not like a koa, but it’s HPL and still durable, though yes, it wont survive being run over by a car. Fortunately, this is unlikely. The KLOS is nice, but way beyond my budget.

    This Kala KA -T has a good sound but in my opinion it would be better with a bit larger nut. I got a Kala Solid Acacia Tenor and sounds very good but the nut is only 35 mm. It is a pity!

    If you like the Clara, you'd better snap one up because the Blackbird factory burned down last October. Everything was lost. We don't know if Joe Luttwak is going to rebuild or not.

      All of my tutorial videos (chord melody) are using that now. It just makes it easier for me to switch and I’m not very keen on Baritone spacing…though I will play them.

    12 string guitar octave strings are usually tuned high over low. I would prefer that method on this uke as well. (I have two Taylor 12’s.)
